Confessions of a Former Bastard Cop

Post by ripper5 »

Good article, it had me thinking of my uncle. He's only a few years older than I and we used to play together as kids, get stoned together as teens & young adults. We even tripped together once or twice.

He left his career in the postal service to become a city cop many years ago now. He recently finally got on social media and we bumped heads, more over matters of his religious faith and my own lack thereof. I guess we're not on talking terms anymore, it's sad to me. He's the one who took his marbles and went home I guess.

I guess my point here is that, at least in his case, his flawed religious beliefs are the bedrock for his own views on being a cop. Something the article didn't really touch on.

sounds quite familiar... my dad was a cop as well, and once several years ago we had a very rare visit, at which I had mentioned my lack of religious faith due to all the scientific stuff I'd learned recently, and then next words he said like right out of the blue was that I shouldn't expect any inheritance, basically disowned me on the spot if not long before, and the next time I saw him, aside from my sisters funeral, was at his deathbed, and I really couldn't think of much to say then.

That is unfortunate Munchy. It seems it's a crutch, especially for them, to excuse their personal actions otj.

^^Encouraging article, but the comments section was disappointing beyond belief. I don't know whether to be relieved or disappointed Aussies have as many irrational ignorant dumfuks.

I was under the impression Australia has the same thriving police state as the US. Maybe not, they just don't know how bad it is here in the US?

Confessions of a Former Bastard Cop

The main difference is there are nowhere near as many firearms in the community, with almost no (legal) handguns. So the average Aussie copper isn't expecting to get shot at, which means they are usually a lot more relaxed. In fact when I was growing up, beat cops didn't even carry guns – that only happend in the 80s.

I can tell you from experience, having been pulled over by cops in the US (California, Nevada) and cops in Australia, it's almost chalk and cheese. American cops are nervous – it's almost as if the more relexed you are, the more wound up they are. In Australia, if you get pulled over you get out of the car and walk over to the cops and they do the same. You both meet halfway and then have a bit of a chat by the side of the road. Don't get me wrong – there are plenty of arsehole Aussie cops, but for the most part they're not itching to manhandle you or shoot you or look for an excuse to escalate.

Australia is a bit more egalitarian like that. You get out of the car to talk to the cops; you sit in the front seat of a taxi to talk to the driver; pauper and politician both queue at the pub.

But don't worry, Australia also has its share of fascist right-wing fucktards, sleazy corporates wannabes and general dumbcunts – and it seems to be getting more selfish by the day. I called it "America Lite" and some of my mates take offence, but they're usually the ones who haven't travelled to the US. We were very much modelled on the British Emprire before WWII, but after that we've been getting closer and closer to the US politically and culturally each year. A lot of teens and young adults even talk with a faux-American accent.

Well I've alwasy said the US has the best and worst of everything. It's a beautiful country, with some of the most progressive ideas and genuine, forward-thinking people – I still have a lot of reinds there – but it's almost like two countries in one when you look at the politcal divide. Perhaps it shouldn't be such a surprise when you consider its civil war and other history.

The main thing Australia has going for it is it's still somewhat socialist. We have free healthcare and subsidised education, a social safety net and public housing, so you generally don't have to worry about getting sick. I've always said spending money on social services is a lot cheaper than spending it on cops, lawyers, judges and prisons.
