Okay, I'm giving up on the Oregon Coast Trail. I tweaked and re-tweaked the route to:
Start: Grants Pass, Oregon.
- down the Rogue River
- to the coast and South
- Kalmiopsis wilderness
- Oregon Caves wilderness
- into California
- Marble Mountain Wilderness
- Castle Crags/Shasta
- Lassen National Park
End: Sierra Butte.
Click for larger View
Start June 1st
End: end of September.
Why: is there any reason not to?
How: got cash, weed, and vaccination.
Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Though the streams are swollen
Keep them doggies rollin'
Rawhide
Rain and wind and weather
Hell bent for leather
Wishin' my gal was by my side
Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Rawhide!

Two questions...
What's the approximate milage of the trip?
What type of footware are you choosing to use?
Just thinking...four months of hiking...probably a lot of rough terrain...
I know what my brother's running shoes look like after just a couple hundred miles.

Mileage? not too far. I'm old and slow and I take a lot of half days, it's a party hike not a marathon.
I reckon about 800 miles.
I have some new Keens boots, same type as last time, I know the brand fits me well, despite the soles did wear down pretty dang good. We'll see.
It is a good question, I'll have to see about what I can do for replacement along the way. Maybe figure out how to have my current boots, which are used but still in reasonable shape, sent for the last month or so, jes in case.
Pic of boot wear and tear last time, and for the newbies here who haven't seen the last hike

Last trip I calculated I used only 3/4 an ounce per month. Half of what I carried, i smoke less than when in the city, Nature has its built-in High already.
Also gave away about an ounce along the trail to fellow hikers. Gifting homegrown was a real joy, I want to do that again.
Then there are weed shops in Brookings and Cave Junction Oregon, so I plan to buy an ounce or so for variety. Depending upon funds.
Sooo.. I,'ll start with about 3oz + 1oz for gifting. A 1/4 pound? Plus whatever I'm able to buy in Oregon. Logistically weed is the least problem.

Sheesh! Sounds like a plan if I’ve heard one before - I didn’t take into account t the shops along the way those are important..
800 miles and plenty to keep that natural high going I can see the kush being least of the worries

Aboot 50 per week...that's a pretty good clip, especially if you have a lot of elevation change.
Yeah, that's what I was wondering aboot...wear & tear on light weight soles.
As a teen we used to wear them heavy soled waffle stompers...soles like tire rubber. They stood up well to wear, but they were heavy as fuk. Got used to wearing sneakers in the woods...much lighter. Works fine in MI because much of the ground is peat...very little rock.
Looking forward to your journal.

I've smoked about a little more than an ounce and a half in the past stuck at home year. That's getting high once or twice a day most days too. Shit's strong if you know what to get.
<edit> That's an impressive itinerary, I'm familiar with parts of the northern half or so and it's pretty spectacular.

Sorry, they're not Jerusalem Cruisers.
I got them at Walmart for ~$10 a few years back. cheap one piece molded, the lace is solely for looks, don't know why I don't just take it off.
Cheapo but they have thick soles, they have to be being so cheapo, so If I had to, i could hike out on 'em
Mainly they're lite at 8oz. Used 'em on the Lassen trip and still trucking.
Departure date? yup, i do!
Got a ride, leave for the drive on Monday may 24th, to avoid the following Memorial Day weekend traffic. The actual date when I start is going to be a little up to him, See he wants to make a photography road trip out of it, and maybe hang out the first or second nights on the trail with me for Old Time sake. I'm jes along for the ride.
Short version: sorta May 27th.

Since I'm finishing in the state where I live. Plan it is to take Amtrak from Reno NV, Which would be a series of hitchhike, bus, train, bus, walk last 3 miles. Depending upon funds or just hitchhike the whole way. I worry tho hitchhiking might not be viable during a pandemic. But by the end of September it could be a different world.

Great idea, how's this sound?
I'm carrying my normal 2 bandanas also a synthetic silk scarf, weighs nothing, works as a great covid face mask, and when it gets cold towards the end its incredibly warm. fwiw I always find bandanas on the trail too, that American flag bandana I'm still using, was a found one.
the plan is to buy a tourist shirt on the way, if it suits my style, a Rogue River t-shirt off the bat would be nice. an Oregon Caves National Park tshirt would be cool too
Otherwise I'm carrying the Lassen National Park t-shirt I bought in Mineral from last time, and used on the trip.
You can see from my list I have a few torso garments for mixing and matching, layering as the kids say. I'll be sending home the rain jacket once I climb out of the Oregon coast mountains and July kicks in. Windbreaker and fiberfill vest is fine for summer showers.

Oh snap...sometimes the simplest things make me feel so dumb. I knew you would be picking up provisions along the way...I knew you could replace gear along the way if needed...but it never dawned on me that you could forgo gear when packing, with plans to pick it up during the trip. Nice.
ripper5 wrote:I'm wondering, seems like the planned rations are mostly dry, light, vagan? Will you aquire the fresh stuff (fruits, veggies, meats) along the way?
I'm guessing, nothing that will be carried...that shit is heavy.
Best I've ever done for "carry it all on your back" hiking was dehydrated fruit (usually in a trail mix), freeze dried veggies in "just add water" meals, and jerky. If you're lucky, maybe an apple or two, and some minimal fishing equipment.

Yup, the fresh things to buy for the trail is always cheese.
You'll see in the quipment list I have that blue insulated foam cooler. Its for the cheese, mayo and any fresh thing in town I may get. It small so not much. Those little luxuries.
And of course while in town mac out on burgers, bananas, broccoli, pizzas, beer... mainly the grease Burgers tho. Maybe carry something nice for the first couple meals.

Maps drying

I print my own maps using digitized US Geological Survey Topo maps and National Geographical software. Then spray coat 'em with this:
It doesn't make 'em exactly waterproof, but keeps the ink from smearing when wet.
Cost is about 26 cents a map, printed on both sides. Total cost $17 - $25 depending on how many mistakes i make and print-overs. such a deal.

nope, its pretty course measurement in the field anyway. Southeast with a little more south is that way. It's usually a zigzag path and the compass is just to keep you on the right course, hmmmm maybe I should go a little more south for a while...sort of thing.

latest...happy 4th arson man!
im in seiad valley california, my 4th resupply my first missing resupply box that was lost in the mail was foun d and rerouted to here. good, my extra reading glasses were in there.
bought my first legal week in Brookings oregon on the coast. didnt need to but why not, tried something called aminal face, meh.. my stuffs better
oregon caves national monument was a bust. couldnt get a tour of the caves, on had to buy a ticket 30 miles away and then show up within hours for the tour, no reservations, impossible when your on foot, took me two days to get there.their policy changed after i left and i had no idea till i showed up. oh well, best laid plans of mice and men... i moved on. the last section through red butte winderness was beautiful. 40 miles of good trail hiking, sweeping vistas, old growth forests, cold springs and wildflowers out the wazoo. i didnt see anybody for 6 days. until i hit the PCT yesterday, saw three people, getting a little crowded here <grin>
broke the frame on my new pack, while on the organ clast. talked to the company, osprey, and they said they would send me a new pack there, jus send the old one back. they actually had a process for long distance hikers in the field. joys it here!
theres a wildfire around the city of weed. making the skies very hazy.

Indeed there is a name for it Mister, it is California Pitcher plant, I misspelled it above, had posting pictures on my mind.
Say Mr G Did you quit and come back, Like a Phoenix Rising From the Ashes?
hey Bob! have I been seeing other hikers?
Oh hell yes, a few on the top of the Rogue River, and then none between the coast and Red Butte wilderness where I connected with a Pacific Crest Trail, pct.
After Seiad Valley cali, it started about 10 to 20 thru hikers a day northbound to Canada. But this last week because of fire closures everyone on pct had to jump ahead a hundred or more miles to skip around those fire closures. It tripled the flux of PCT hikers, there was a big bubble where I was seeing 60-80 hikers a day. Since I'm southbound and they're Northbound I'd been playing chicken with those guys all day on the trail.
Fwiw literally half are women, mostly soloing.. Yay baby!
Currently i'm at Castle Crags State Park, camping away from the campground and noise. There's a skunk nearby scenting the air, hinting my camp is too close. soooo .. lights out soon.
Thanks everyone for sharing yer joy from my little updates.

Do I partner up or a loner?
Both. Well except for sharing camps, everyone else is Northbound and I'm southbound (the southbound PCTers should be catching up with me this next section) so far no chance partering up for more than a camp together.
Generally I prefer to be alone. I'm not out here to socialize but many of the hikers are. yet most of these people are like minded, pleasantly easy to get along with. And half are young women!

Lassen Park is closed, Chester town is evacuated and Old Station town, next resupply, is partially evacuated from fires. I should of ended the trip yesterday on Friday the 13th, yanno karma. But I'm going to go on for the next four to five days, skies are relatively clearer today, I can see my shadow. I don't see how I can go any farther tho, my route is on fire. Now the popo. Redundancy. Pros you have a backup, security. Cons extra weight, extra volume.
To help optimize those 2 parameters I use a jump box. It contained some of my backups: extra reading glasses sunglasses pills potions spoon Fork tent stake headlamp phone lithium batteries solar panel cables camera charger shorts socks ... little things that'll be hard to replace on the trail. Additionally repair items,, tape glue buckles sewing stuff webbing cord tools,, then I would mail it onto the next supply point and then keep LeapFroging it up. There was an Xtra cost for mailing tho. And not all supply points had a post office, and on this last trip the post office lost my jump box (and supply box) for Supply 1 and I didn't see it till California on supply 4.
But to the question what I carried for redundancy as near as I can recollect, I had extra sunglasses and reading glasses. Usb charging cable for the solar panel. And then my clean dry camp socks could always be used as extra hiking socks too. Camp shoes for boot redundancy.

Camp shoes for boot redundancy.
this ive thought of as well
never had it happen but boots blowing out can really foul up the works and their mighty hard to repair
what boots do you hike in?
and what shoes were your backup?
not the place to skimp on quality
way way back a troop leader of a week long hike in yosemite forgot to put his boots on at the trailhead and didnt think of it till hours laters and long past being able to correct it
got distracted getting all us boys going
he managed the week in his tennis shoes
they didnt even have laces
slip on type
often wondered if he thought to baby them through the week
my guess is that he did
if memory serves they were vans
remarkable good shoes
im good in bare feet and often make it a practice
but never for a week
ah the questions life leaves us with

full sleeves of it
and the torso
mind you id asked for it
was a rock i wanted to climb so i dug in and uprooted a ton of the stuff

Fire starter....along with a good knife, the most important items to carry.
Did a group hike in high school...5 day 50 miles Pictured Rocks along Lake Superior. Most of the group had zero experience. We had two college aged guides. Each day they had someone different carry the matches. On the third day one of the guides was carrying the matches, which he intentionally got wet. With feigned surprise, as we were setting up camp for the night, he asks the group how can we start a fire? I reached into my shirt pocket..."You could use my lighter.". He promptly snatched it and doused it with water..."And if that got wet as well?" Knowing he was trying to make a point, but insulted that he assumed our stupidity, I pulled another lighter from my other shirt pocket..."Then you could use this one. And if you soak this one as well, I have four more in individual waterproof containers, which I will not let you touch. It's bad enough you put all the matches together, but you also failed to wax them to prevent just such a thing." ...<crickets>... I don't think he was very happy with me.

i know how to make fire with friction a couple of ways but
its insanely helpful to know the right type of woods to use and how to find them dry
frictions boards with bamboo or arundo cane are almost better than a bow
easier to find bone dry but im in southern california so the climate helps tremendously and my experience doesnt translate well to other parts of the nation...
i know how to make tinder with a box and fire but never found it necessary to have
you can always shave down the kindling enough to start a fire and just never was in extreme enough elements for it not to work
plus even if was the fuel would be so damp even good tinder wouldnt accomplish the job
imagine if i was desperate id skip the fire and keep walking
keep the body temp up that way preferable
assuming i could keep walking...

I walked off to have a smoke...as I hear him start to explain the importance of being able to start a fire to the rest of the group.
Turns out boy scouts is good for a few things.
In MI we're lucky. Birch bark or pine sap, both will light up even if they've been doused with water. Oaks hold their dead branches and drops the bark from them...even if the canopy above doesn't keep 'em dry, they will be one of the first things to dry once out of the rain. Maples tend to drop their dead branches butt first, so those upright branches usually stay pretty dry. Lighter, matches, or flint...I can start a fire when it's raining.

Way back in '15 when I first started hiking with a solar panel, I went the Battery Bank paradigm. It made sense, charging the bank while hiking, then charge the devices in camp.
But after some testing, it turns out there's only a 55% efficiency going from solar > battery bank > device. In other words you would spend 45% more time sun charging a bank then directly charging the device.
So I dropped the extra weight of the battery bank like a hot potato. Haven’t looked back
Now many people only carry a smart phone, doubleing it down as an ereader, camera, music player, GPS, Maps... without a solar panel a Battery Bank works for them. Thing is my solar panel is lighter then a battery bank at 3.25 ounces fwiw

At some point we had a great national forest service...but sadly, it seems to have been bled dry of funds to effectively maintain it's assets.

Already put in 7 trail miles today, and there was no place to camp, too much private land.
Walked the road, pumping pavement.
So much road, for 9 more miles.
At least there were some curious fence post along the way
The only bear I saw the whole trip.
Finally late, trespassed on a property I was sure no was there, bivouac in the ferns and reeds away from the road and houses. A look in the morning at my camp.

Got going early, bright eyed and ready for my first resupply, Maybe find a café, store or showers Expectations
Following the river for 4 miles on road into the small community of Agness. There has been a post office here since 1897. Early on the mail was delivered down the river by boat.
The community was named and then misspelled after the first postmaster's daughter. Sustained by mining, now retirees.

Gary the postmaster. He was Proud of their little town. A Volunteer staffed and funded fire dept and library. Which Gary was very proud of.
Agness library.
But but.. but.. my resupply box was not there!!
Gary was real helpful, got it tracked down to freight box (train) outside of Eugene Oregon. He Put a trace and recall on it.
But there was no cell phone connection, a fight the locals were still engaged in. So I couldn't call my brother on the situation and adjust my next mailing. Oh well.
There was a little store, maybe peanut butter and Ramen sorta thing, no cold stuff. Alas it was closed for the next 3 days. If it wasn't for bad luck..
I was down some maps, money and food. The food I could stretch, the only map I was missing tho was a half a day into the next town on the coast, Gold Beach, 5 days away. I had the solar panel and didn't need batteries or charge. So Doable.
Gary said the old south river trial was there, at least he walked about 10 years go. Said a city girl came by last year to day hike some of it, unusual since no place to park but at the post office here, not a recreational spot. But she came back a couple hours later, could not get around a landslide/debris a half a mile in. Well Ok …good a trail is there, bad if lot of downed trees. but I'm not a little girl soo…
..so on my way. Found the trail after a little. It started out looking good, The river 400 feet down on one side. The trail eroded and brushy, but follow-able..
Till it was not
Sure enough ½ mile in, a huge landslide, really huge trees down, And lots of smaller ones. Itwent on, no end in sight. Couldn't go down around cuz brambles to a cliff and river, So up, it was a steep dog scramble, got up and around a couple of the big trees, pushed it, slipped half way down to the river. All the elevation I worked so hard for lost. Bad road rash up my right thigh and butt. Climbed back up, stashed the pack and went on to check the route out. Dismay! I wasn't even half way and no way back down to where presumably the trail would be. Fuk! Fought my way back to the pack then back out.
Or it got rough, kicked my ass and I wussed out.
I rescinded my earlier condescending view of that 'little city' girl.
Looking down the bushy trail, heading back to Agness where I came from. Turning tail is depressing.
Took a break by a spring, washed up, regrouped, and used up the iodine Lrus had suggested. Yeah I it hurt, but everything was hurting by then.
Dragged my ass back down the road I jes came up. Ended camping back on that same private property bivy camp again. Kept mucking up the sleeping bag from the rash puss. Didn't care, jes crashed. Whatta day.

I was to go halfway down the river from here on the old trail on North side. And continuing on the Northside on roads to the coast. Since the Old River Trail was impassable,
Plan B; cross cross the river to the main road and follow it down to the coast on the Southside. There still supposed to be about 6 or 7 miles of trail on the Northside close to town. My maps are missing most of the trail.. So guess work, ask the locals as you get there sort of thing.
In the morning back down the road to the bridge, then crossed to the Southside.
Then down the main road about 4 miles which brought me to cougar Lane restaurant that catered to boat tours going up the Rogue River from Gold Beach. The tours would stop here for lunch early dinner.
One of tour boats with about 20 people going up the river. They were loud and intrusive but they did slow and respect the rafters and the kayakers.
The large outdoor deck overlooking the river. I had the pulled pork plate and split a cobbler + ice cream dessert with one of the girls from the tour. She's from Texas and was vaccinated!
With a full belly and the company of a woman, I felt like a new man after yesterday.
But it got better, the RV Park next door had showers and a small store. Cleaned up and was able to get some cheese and apples to supplement my supplies.

Shortly down the road I passed the confluence of the Illinois River and the Rouge.
The road was scenic. Wildflowers plentiful.
Made camp on a old spur road. There was a nice creek nearby, private, kind of a nice spot. Tho little rocky and ended up putting a little tear on my tent floor. Patched it up later in town.

branson canyon is around 2500' and winds for a good quarter miles up a gully you have to climb alot to pass
its ends in a box in the canyon and three ravines feed into it
three waterfalls
if you go at the right time of year their flowing and the cliffs are all moss covered
theres one way to climb above it from inside but it was to iffy to solo so i havnt gotten above
love the moss covered falls

Good Mourning Oregon Coast. Made an early eager start on The OCT, Oregon Coast Trail. An official Oregon State scenic trail, patched together with beach, trail, road and highway 101. A work still in progress. I'll be walking only a small part on this trip, just till the California border. Access and travel on the coast is an Oregon cultural tradition taken seriously, inherent in the state constitution. To the residents this route/trail already long existed, the state jes making it official.
As soon as hit the 'trail' this girl gracefully caught up to me, I kicked up my pace and she considerable slowed hers down for a bit. Chatted her up, Marcia was coast guard and did this 8 mile run every mourning. She was part of the search and rescue unit bunked temporarily at Gold Beach. A Very cool start.

“It had nothing to do with gear or footwear or the backpacking fads or philosophies of any particular era or even with getting from point A to point B.
It had to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles for no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental.” ~ Cheryl Strayed

Fortunately I know High-low tide cycles are slightly less than 6 hours apart. Watching the tide come back in at Camp, I deduced high tide will be about midnight-3am. Good means I'll get low tide tomorrow around noon. I'll need that for when crossing the Pistol River tomorrow. I hope high tide doesn't Lap at my camp tonight. June 9, 3 days from last supply, third day of carring all of my fresh water. One needs about 10 lbs of water a day or 5 quarts/liters.
I did not set up the tent as not to draw attention to myself. Another technically illegal camp, this one still in the State Park. The rules for camping are anywhere except: within city limits, state parks outside of car campgrounds and not visible from residences. Restrictive but Oregon is constantly negotiating exceptions, No one question me about it, actually encouraged me.
With no tent and right next to the ocean the sleeping bag and all got soaked in dew. View fine from the bag tho.
A day on the beach.
Turned out low tide was about 10 am this mourning. So I had a low tide purty much all mourning to noon. Which was too cool, tide pools and I could walk between the rock sculptures. Just incredible, awesome, play it again Sam.

Filling up water from a road side spring. Not an interesting pic, but at the time really cool. Hadn't seen fresh water for 3 days now. Pistol river was too salt saturated.
Eventually entered this State park. ummm Scenic Corridor. The distinction is no camping? Illegal again. There seems to be a correlation between scenic and illegal camping. Well I have time to ponder the these patterns and anomalous. Life, the universe and everything. And loving it!

After an hour the clouds lifted some. When I meet this dude.
I don't know his full story, but he was waiting out the storm in his truck on a rarely used turnout in the scenic corridor, no views. But access to the OCT that I just came off. Hung out on his tailgate sharing weed, I left him with one of my lighters when he showed me a pile of worthless "waterproof matches". Roller's guess on what redundancy equipment question had me remember that I did have an extra lighter cause of this. He claimed to been there a couple of days, gas constraint. Keep his phone charged tho, had enough gas for town tho, Said LEO didn't bother for overnight parking if ya weren't in the way. Close to City limits be different, hence here. Good to know. Showed some of his work doing an inlay on an outside wooden deck of a ying and yang symbol. Nice work! Refreshing stop after a day of isolation.
Views all within the couple of hours to noon. App seyz i have till 2:pm to find camp, then the rains start again for another 24 hours. Much heavier then yesterday. Heavy in my book, mild for Oregon apparently.

A day in town, eating and taking care of business, touched base with MPG. Did tourist stuff…
The come on. Don't know if that's a deal or not,
So naturally I took a look inside.
My first legal purchase of weed in my life. Momentous. The girl was cool and humored this old relic, showing me around, Finally bought bud, "Animal Head", nice bouquet, sticky, on sale…,
June 16
Big breakfast and left town and down Highway 101 next 5 miles, almost to California but not quite. Crossing the Checto River.

"Not all who wander are lost.” — J. R. R. Tolkien
The highway was uneventful, Wide dirt path area off to the side to walk on, sunny day, dogs friendly.
But after the Leaving the highway up the Winchuck River. The private land got Bad, The next 8 miles was private land inside the National forest, it was end to end private homes, some with large expansive properties. Money. And for every No Trespassing Sign, there were 17 Trump signs, for every Trump Sign a Trump racist sign among the 17 No Trespassing signs. The county sheriff deputy did a slow drive by to check me out. The mail carrier doing his route was cool tho.
A lady near the end came out acting friendly but warned me there was no camping up ahead in the National Forest (not true), the road ends (true), warned a lot of mountain loins and bears. When that didn't' faze me. Lack of water ahead (not true), but she did not offer me any. She went on about the pot growers taking over up there.
At that point I broke character and replied that was ok, I would jes smoke a bowl with them. Eyed me funny, but not deterred to deter me, she went about the Meth labs up there, the Forest Service is evil, corrupt, Imigrants and homeless (me?) I cant remember it all, real MAGA shit.
I thanked her for the info, extracted myself and pushed extra fast to the National forest boundary outside of local LEO jurisdiction. Then 2 more miles to camp and good water at the confluence of the Winchuck River and Bear creek.
A 17 mile day!! Whatta day! Beat as hell, tho good to know I still have it in me.
June 17
Bear Creek.
Beautiful area. The road went from Poorly maintained to an overgrown path.

The downfall quickly made it virtually cross county, then when I got to my real cross country all uphill, I was stymied, thick growth, brambles, old age, bad knees… and other such rationalization, I turned back down to find a camp and regroup.
I Found a little spring in my bushwhacking and with water nearby I took a day off in the Siskiyou forest. Contemplated butterflies. Resigned to giving up the Kalmiopsis Wikderness
I turned tail. 2nd time this trip.
More adventures going out, When I got back to the Private Paved road thankfully a very cool girl offered a ride down to where I could catch a bus into California and the back to Oregon, to the next supply point, Oregon Cave Junction town.

I'm suddenly find myself in Cave Junction sweating in 98 degree weather . Talk about Changes in Latitude Changes in Attitude, well longitude.
It highlighted the disruption, a discontinuity. It takes something away, something intrinsic in a continuous hike. Just reconstructing my state of mind at the time. An itch in the back of the brain as I had business to still take care of; had to get my pack frame fixed or replaced, get resupplied, and get my now found 'missing in the mail' jump box rerouted to siead Valley, next resupply. Stuff.
Cave Junction town. Closed head shop. Cool window display tho.
Got hold Of Osprey Packs. Promised to send me a new pack to my next resupply at Siead Valley, California, Jes send the old one back.
Post office and awkward packing
Grey Back car Campground. The camp host give me the scoop on the Caves. Ya needed to sign up for the limited tours at Cave Junction town in the mourning first come first serve, then show up 18 miles away at the caves for the tour, And prioritizing vaxx families, trying maximize visitation during covid, Makes sense but a single dude (me) was out. Naw man, there is joy not having a safety net. Thanks for the concern.
Only two to four sections I expect(hope) to not see people for days. Depending upon the snow. On the Oregon coast I suspect too many people. And when I'm on the PCT there's always people.
The kalmiopsis in the Siskiyou coastal mountains is the oldest and largest Wilderness in Oregon yet the least visited. Guess I'll find out what's there, other than an ancient Azalea, a living fossil, from whence it gets its name.
Also I found out I'm going by the rare Oregon redwoods as I come down to Chetco River to the coast.
Dreaming over the maps is half the fun.
The start is the newly minted Siskiyou Cascade National Monument, it is the collision between The Siskiyou range and the Cascades Range. Supposedly a unique geological area.
I'm rambling,

Hobnailed boots were used for mountaineering to grip on sloping rock surfaces. Mountaineering hobnailed boots tended to have large pointed hobnails on the extreme edges of the soles and heels to grip small roughness on steeply sloping rock and on snow, particularly before crampons were used.

That's kinda cool!
Thanks but I don't think ice is going to be my problem with the warming temperatures, above freezing at night. Knock on wood. but I'm hoping for is to be able to glissade. Better than walking.
But I do have some steel insteps, .. and my 12-point crampons
but I'm not taking 'em.

checkin in.. I'm in Seiad Valley. Wrenched my knee in the snow around Mount Ashland. I've been taking half days to take it easy, but there were no easy days. A shitloaded downfall from the excess snow this year. Consequently I'm going to be hold up here for a few days trying to recover. Already 6 days behind schedule. If knee doesn't get better I might have to consider going back home.. bummer.
It's hell getting old.

yes, a camera.
One thing about snow is you can read it like a newspaper in the morning to see you who's been traveling around. Overall I have found brown bear to be good people. Most days while in snow I saw bear tracks. But I've only seen one so far, a way across a meadow, he had a bark for me I barked back and we moved on.. I'm the guest, it's his home.
Today I head back to the trail got extra food to take it easy. I don't know if it's my imagination but the knee seems better this morning.

You know what I mean.
They're all good...until they're not. My cousin's kid got mauled bicycling trails in Alaska. Momma charged out from the brush and took him off his bike. Luckily his buddy that was in front of him came running back, waving his bike above his head, screaming at the top of his lungs. It worked well enough for them to get clear. He had to be air lifted out and spent a couple weeks in the hospital. Didn't stop him from going right back to the trails...but he carries a fire extinguisher of bear mace now.

Hanging out Cape Blanco State Park catching up with y'all. For some odd reason got cell connection here. waiting for this afternoon when low tide occurs at 5:30, to head out and cross the Six Rivers couple miles away. Supposed to be the biggest Crossing without a bridge.
Crossed the Elk River yesterday, water up to the balls.
Where the river came into the ocean a sea lion keep popping his head up in different places watching me as i as I stripped and secured the pack, then he started popping up in the river staring at me while I was crossing. A little distracting but trippy cool.
Sorry no pics but I kid you not.

Sand or snow?
Short answer, Sand is better.
Long answer,
Depends on the conditions, uphill dry sand is torture but postholing in knee deep snow is exhausting. Firm snow without steep angled traversing is better than trail.
Firm sand at low tide is pure joy.
And of course sleeping on sand is better and sleeping on snow.

Time
121 days. ~17 weeks. Including the week I took off to let my knee to heal.
Distance,
The Oregon Coast Trail is officially 420 miles without any Ferry rides.
hey 420!
But I took two Ferry rides so about 400 miles.
Add the Siskiyou Range to the coast about 240 miles.
~640 miles.
Resupplies,
I'm going to say 10 resupplies.
but on the coast I was resupplying food every 2 to 4 days because I could. But I count resupplies on the coast when I also used the laundromat, post office and resupplying dry goods as toothpaste, lighters, TP. maps.. About every 10 days.
Showers,
13. Hot showers are important.
